About Green Bay

Green Bay is a owned and operated by two families. The family connection is between two Kiwi brothers, John and Greg, who work on opposite sides of the globe. Both brothers are married with young families and everyone has an active role in the company.

Greg (UK), a former globe-trotting marketing man with a deep affection for the wonderful natural products of New Zealand that he left behind aged 25. He settled in the United Kingdom fifteen years ago and, with Jo, leads the Green Bay team in Europe. Together they are responsible for growing the business in a sustainable way by offering more people more choices to eat real food.
John (NZ) runs the office in scenic Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand. He spends his time working with hand-picked bee-keepers, organic green barley farmers and kelp divers to assuring the best possible quality food ends up in our products and on your plate. You could argue he has the best job in the world if you like the pictures he took on a recent journey around the South Island to look at the harvest and meet with growers.
Jo (UK) is a life-long, but refreshingly non-patronizing, example of healthy eating and sustainable, conscious living (although we have observed that she does occasionally succumb to the siren call of really good chocolate - organic and fairly traded of course!). It is Jo's conversations with our customers and suppliers rather than an accountant's spreadsheet that leads Green Bay towards new and exciting projects and products.
Maria (NZ) is a talented communicator who has worked for household names in the advertising industry in Christchurch in London. She helps us to gather up the wonderful stories about Green Bay products and present them in an interesting manner. She manages to combine her Green Bay commitments with running a busy and happy family with John and Maria's daughters, Sophie and Phoebe. The videos and photographs you can see on the web-site are her handy-work and if you were ever to spot a typo on a Green Bay product label or product catalogue, she's the person to email!

We source our ingredients as much as possible from our friends and contacts who are organic pioneers in their field. We take time to build personal relationships with our growers and supply partners, some of whom we have known for over twenty years. This mutual long term commitment creates the space to acquire a detailed knowledge about the origin and production processes of our foods which we can share with you. We are proud of our producers' skills and knowledge and our partnership with them. Together we make every effort to ensure that our foods reach customers in an optimal nutritional state.

As parents of young children, we know that a diet rich in unprocessed whole foods keeps a family healthy and happy. Complementing a few meals and snacks with nature's 'wonderfoods' - such as green barley leaf and Manuka honey - is a very convenient way of getting goodness into our bodies.

We believe that the traditional Western diet is increasingly failing to deliver the level of nutrition that a modern lifestyle demands. Learning about healthy food enables us to make conscious, informed choices about what we eat, while choosing to supplement our diet with functional foods can bring us closer to sustainable wellbeing. There is lots of data, recipes and tips on our website about food and wellbeing, which we hope will inform and inspire you!

Because a business connects with so many people - customers, suppliers, policy makers - we believe that how we act and how we invest our money and our time becomes an important lever for making a small difference today in the wider world. We are very comfortable running a business that makes a profit but we believe that 'for profit only' business and a relentless pursuit of growth for the sake of growth will eventually exhaust the world of its resources and the world is already showing the strain, irrespective of what you believe about climate change. We have other reasons for founding Green Bay .. Here are a few of them:

  • to support the talented and pioneering organic growers who grow good food because they simply believed in it and before it was fashionable or profitable.
  • to give our customers an alternative to the lowest common denominator homogenised food that seems to be the standard offering of the multi-nationals who dominate our food chain.
  • give more people - young and old - the pleasure of buying real food, produced by people who are prepared to stake their name on the quality of the product.
  • to give our children the example and ultimately the experience of being enterprising - creating a real product for a fair price, remaining optimistic in the face of difficult challenges, doing something because you believe in it, the exhilaration of trusting other people and being trusted (and having it work :-))

We have a long way to go on this journey and much to learn. Thank you to everyone who buys our products and shares their opinion on the products
