Kamahi Honey with Rosehip

rosehip_honey

Green Bay has paired RAW Kamahi Honey (“car-ma-he”) with exquisite, natural Bulgarian Rosehip. The result is a sweet and delicate honey with a slight tartness of flavour that is delicious on scones, toasted or fresh bread and as a natural sweetener for summer-time tea.

Rosehip is an old-fashioned natural remedy for all the family and reputed to be beneficial for the stomach, back pain and arthritis.
KamahiFlowerSpike

We combined milled rosehip with our RAW Kamahi Honey which comes from the wilderness of New Zealand’s South Island where the native Kamahi tree grows abundantly in the forest canopy. The honeybees gather nectar from the spike of small, creamy white flowers in spring to create this distinct, golden honey.
According to WebMD: http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-839-ROSE%20HIP.aspx?activeIngredientId=839&activeIngredientName=ROSE%20HIP
Rose hips are the round portion of the rose flower just below the petals. Rose hips contain the seeds of the rose plant. Dried rose hips and the seeds are used together to make medicine.Fresh rose hips contain a lot of vitamin C, so they share many uses with vitamin C including preventing and treating coldsflu, and vitamin C deficiencies. However, much of the vitamin C in rose hips is destroyed during drying and processing and also declines rapidly during storage. Because of this, many rose hip-derived “natural” vitamin C products have actually been fortified with lab-made vitamin C, but their labels may not always say so.Rose hips are also used for stomach disorders including stomach spasms, stomach acid deficiency, preventing stomach irritation and ulcers, and as a “stomach tonic” for intestinal diseases. They are also used for diarrheaconstipation, gallstonesgallbladder ailments, lower urinary tract and kidney disorders, fluid retention (dropsy or edema), gout, back and leg pain (sciatica), diabeteshigh cholesterolweight losshigh blood pressure, chest ailments, fever, increasing immune function during exhaustion, increasing blood flow in the limbs, increasing urine flow and quenching thirst.

In foods and in manufacturing, rose hips are used for tea, jam, soup, and as a natural source of vitamin C.

Toxicity – Liver support

Toxicity is an unavoidable aspect of modern life and will affect the working of our bodies and cells. This is evident in the way we feel the day after we have consumed more alcohol than normal, watched a child have a moment of bad behaviour after consuming a packet of  brightly coloured sweets or realising that our ability to eat the same foods we did at 20 is not there any more at 50. For some folk, toxicity shows up in symptoms such as headaches that occur with prolonged exposure to a difficult person or intense electro-magnetic radiation. Like it or not there are toxins in our food, our water and the air we breathe without consuming any ‘bad stuff’.

In the Spring as new growth begins to show in nature, our bodies naturally move away from needing the fats to keep us warm on cold dark days and towards fresher tasting foods.  Whilst there is still little on offer to eat in the garden, during lent,  the Spring solstice on 21st March offers us a particularly good moment to shed some toxicity from the body built up over winter.

For some people giving up coffee and chocolate and drinking more water is enough of a detox; for others a vegan, sugar free, gluten free diet is ideal.  Whether you decide to take up fasting, bikram yoga and coffee enemas or just an extra daily walk around the park, I suggest that alongside any detoxification you do try and increase your intake of chlorophyll relative to other foods. My family are all having a green drink for breakfast during lent (recipe below).

The liver is the primary filter for all of the toxins, both those ingested orally (food/drinks) and emotionally in our bodies. It processes our stress and keeps the body balanced correctly to make all the body systems perform. Fasting conditions (or just a lack of the usual toxins) gives our liver a chance to process the fat cells and extraneous material that builds up over time.

One of the most important naturally produced antioxidants that helps the liver do its job is sodium dismutase. The internal availability of this antioxidant diminishes over time but can be supplemented, especially helpfully during detoxification period.  Green Bay’s green Wheat or Green Barley Grass powder is an easy way of achieving this and can be added easily in a small amount, to a jug of water with the juice of half a lemon and sipped as required. Personally, I like to enhance that the extra water consumed during a detox with a few electrolytes and minerals to increase the take up of nutrients.

How to alkalise your body?

ID-10036935The pH level of your body’s internal fluids affects absolutely every cell in your body. The pH level of  blood has an ideal of 7.365  ( ie. slightly alkaline) and a tolerance range around this. Deviations outside these levels would be likely to have a major negative impacts on health over a prolonged period of time.

For most people who eat a modern diet, the norm is towards acidity (acidosis) and if left unchecked can affect all cellular functions. When blood pH is even slightly deviating towards acidity this will result in lower oxygen transfer, with a knock on effect on many body systems: frequently the first symptom is fatigue. Other possible symptoms of tissue acidity would be chronic inflammation, thirst without satiety, reflux or indigestion or rapid breathing during sleep.

A correct acid alkaline(pH) balance will maintain a healthy body. Body pH will be affected by the water we drink, the level of stress and toxicity in our wider environments and our state of mind. As well as our diet.  Ideally 80% of our diet should come from foods that leave an alkaline residue in our bodies with only 20% from acid residue foods. (see food pH spectrum)

acidic-alkaline-phchart

Alkaline residue foods are vegetables and fruits, green foods, sea salt, raw honey and raw Apple cider vinegar. Acid residue foods comprise all animal products, nuts and cooked/processed cereals, coffee, tea, sugar and alcohol.

Your acid /alkali ratio may be measured in your urine or saliva using pH test papers and is definitely worth looking at to understand where your body typically lies on the scale.

Weight Loss

Here at Green Bay we have a simple philosophy for weight loss:

ID-10079667Give your body everything it needs and nothing it doesn’t. We realize it can be a bit more complicated than that (sometimes it really does feel like your body wants that giant piece of chocolate cake), but generally, the best thing we can do is provide our body with the broad range of nutrients it requires to keep us energized, happy and healthy. When the body’s nutrient intake is where it needs to be, cravings diminish and energy levels rise, resulting in a more active lifestyle – all the ingredients that are needed for long-term, natural weight loss.

A good place to start is to make a plan and give some time to procure the right foods so they will be there when you need them – a good source of water, fresh vegetables and tasty proteins in abundance. You may decide to start with a detox and prepare your schedule for a day (3 or so days in) of feeling grumpy and susceptible to veering off track. For best results, nourish your cells by drinking 1.5 to 2 litres of water per day, avoid toxic sweeteners and sugars (including refined carbohydrates), animal fats and leave up to 5 hour gaps between meals to activate fat burning in the body.

You will aim to rebalance the body’s biochemistry by optimising body pH and satisfying its need for essential fatty acids, good protein, high quality vitamins and minerals, antioxidants, digestive enzymes and dietary fibre. One of the reasons we have cravings is that our body needs nutrients that it is not getting – perhaps because it is unable to absorb them or because our system has lost its ability to balance itself having grown accustomed to constant stimuli such as sugar, carbohydrate or caffeine. As a result, a stabilised diverse, nutrient-rich diet (full of raw and steamed veggies) is absolutely paramount in any weight loss plan. Sticking to a diet as close to nature as possible can help your body meet its nutritional requirements and that’s where we can help!

Green Bay products that are especially helpful in your weight loss plan include:

Raw Apple Cider Vinegar with Manuka Honey

This energizing combination assists the body in maintaining a healthy metabolism and good blood sugar levels, helpful if you’re dieting and suffering from sugar lows which can leave you reaching for the nearest source of carbohydrates (healthy or not). Studies have also found the acetic acid contained in apple cider vinegar to be associated with reduced liver lipids and less fat accumulation.apple cider

‘ACV’ combined with Manuka Honey provides a soothing mantle for the gastrointestinal tract, protecting it from irritants, and helping the body digest and unlock the nutrients found in the food you eat.

Organic Fine Kelp

kelp-816065-mGiant Kelp contains alginates and over 70 trace minerals, including naturally high levels of iodine and potassium; much more than iodized salt and many other kelps. Iodine is vital for a healthy thyroid. Our thyroid gland absorbs iodine ions to make hormones that control our body’s metabolic rate. If we’re deficient in those hormones our metabolic rate can drop by as much as 50% which means that we are burning dramatically less calories. KelpKelp is swiftly becoming the new wonder food for weight-loss support. Scientific research published in March 2010 discovered that the alginates found in Kelp were better at preventing fat absorption than most over-the-counter slimming treatments. Alginates (seaweed fibre) are key to reducing the fat absorbed by our bodies.

Organic Green Barley grass Powder

ID-100134196Green Barley grass floods the body with chlorophyll, delivering a stunning range of nutrients in their most vital form. It’s packed with 18 amino acids, as well as beta-carotene, calcium, folic acid, pantothenic acid, vitamin K, B6 and vitamin C. It also contains minerals including potassium, magnesium, iron, copper, phosphorus, manganese and zinc – all in an easily digestible form.

wheat

This cascade of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, antioxidants and highly digestible carbohydrates helps to increase energy levels, rebuild cells and restore health. Popular with athletes who have high nutrient requirements to support physical performance, this natural super nutritious food can give all of us extra pep!

Also, according to a 2010 meta-analysis by SS AbuMweis et al, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, beta-glucan in barley helped lower LDL cholesterol, which is the “bad” kind of cholesterol.

Organic Flax Fibre

flax-seeds-1013916-mFlax Fiber contains good levels of soluble and insoluble fibres help to ensure that glucose is released steadily into the bloodstream. This is particularly important in cases of hypoglycaemia, metabolic syndrome and diabetes, but our Flax Fibre is also really good at leveling out those sugar rush ups and downs. As a food with a low glycaemic load (GL), Flax Fibre helps your body to avoid triggering excessive insulin release and a subsequent “sugar low” which can lead to cravings.flax fiber

A good intake of Flax Fibre can also help to improve blood cholesterol levels. We all know that high cholesterol is bad because it is a factor in cardiovascular problems. Flax Fibre works to trap fat and glucose and it’s then swept out of the body.

Whether it is a drizzle of Apple Cider Vinegar with Manuka Honey on your salad, a sprinkle of Flax Fibre on your porridge, a spoon of Green Barley Grass in your morning smoothie or a dash of Kelp on your fish with supper, we try to make it as easy as possible for you to incorporate nutrient-dense functional foods into your daily diet. An important part of any weight loss plan is to enjoy and feel good about the foods you are eating. All of our products are not only full of health-giving properties, but are packed with flavor that make any meal that much more delicious and satisfying. With a strong nutritional foundation and regular exercise routine, you will be well on your way to reaching your weight loss goals in no time!

Immune System

Our immunity is provided by millions of cells working to identify and eliminate “hostile” elements, such as free radicals. It is a tremendously adaptable and powerful system, although it can become depleted by infections, lack of sleep, anxiety or a diet low in whole foods. Signs that our immunity needs a boost – a cold we can’t shake off, tiredness that won’t go away – may prompt us to increase our vitamin C intake, but regaining a robust immune system demands a balanced complex of nutrients, including antioxidants, zinc and essential fatty acids. Green Bay’s green grass powders provide an excellent range of such nutrients, in a form that is easily absorbed, enabling the body to resist infections.

Detox

ID-100112627

Toxins present the human body with constant challenges: they age us, slow us down, impair our digestion and negatively affect our appearance. If allowed to build up in our cells, toxic stagnation can cause disease and chronic ill health. A good internal cleansing is called for, but somehow we have lost our connection with regular detoxification in our approach to eating. Properly carried out, a detox has much to offer us: it can make us feel more attuned and awake, bringing rest and rejuvenation throughout our bodies. While we sleep and breathe, we are naturally detoxing: many more toxins are shed through our skin.

ID-100145182 We can increase this action by drinking more water and ensuring that our levels of fresh vegetables, fruit and fibre remain high, foregoing stimulants such as sugar and caffeine.

Green Bay’s green grass powders are packed with chlorophyll, making them ideal for supporting the body during its daily internal cleanse. Taken consistently, they can bring remarkable detox benefits, helping to decongest the liver, purify the blood and invigorate the entire system.

Blood Circulation

blood-111108

Our blood is our “liquid tissue”, travelling through a vast network of blood vessels to provide water, oxygen and nutrients to all cells and clearing away cellular waste. A healthy heart to drive our circulation and abundant nutrients such as silicon, potassium and vitamin K to keep our arteries supple are essential to maintaining this vital flow.

block blood vessel

Broken capillaries, chilblains and varicose veins are some of the conditions that arise where circulation is not moving steadily: more seriously, the “bad” fats we eat can become rancid and enmeshed in the cell walls of veins and arteries, giving rise to heart disease.

Among its many wonderful properties, Apple Cider Vinegar with Manuka Honey emulsifies fats, enabling the body to remove them more easily from the blood, while the apple pectin supports this cleansing action by dislodging cholesterol from the arteries. A good intake of Flax Fibre may improve blood cholesterol levels, which are a factor in cardiovascular problems.

BadGood-Cholesterol

The fibre appears to trap fat and glucose, enabling it to be swept out of the body, and seems to provide some protection against high blood pressure and angina. Essential fatty acids help to thin the blood, reducing the chance of blood clots forming. They also build flexible, permeable cell walls, an important factor in maintaining healthy arteries. –
