Why Does Manuka Honey Give You Energy?

fructose.jpgManuka Honey is an immediate source of energy after eating. "It must be full of sugar then," I hear you say. Wrong. The sugar in honey is different to that we put in our tea. The honey we put in our tea is sucrose which is made up of two molecules bonded together. When we eat sucrose our bodies have to use its own enzymes to separate the molecules before the energy can be used.

Honey is very, very different. Bees have their own special enzymes which they add to the nectar which separates the sucrose into fructose and glucose. When we come to heat the honey, it is already broken down into two simple sugars which our bodies can absorb directly, providing an instant source of energy.
